VOIP Stands for 'Voice over Internet Protocol' This is a technology that simply allows you to make phone calls using your Internet connection instead of your regular fixed Telkom line phone service. It is also referred to as Voice over IP, Broadband phone or Internet phone service. In traditional telephony, the phone company delivers services over a fixed line “trunk” that connects the PBX to the public-switched telephone network (PSTN) and this trunk carries the phone calls from the Service Provider to the public. With VoIP you still simply pick up your normal phone, dial a number and talk. VoIP is simple and is for everyone. It doesn't matter if the person you are calling has VoIP or not, this is all taken care of by your VoIP service provider

The only requirement for this technology is reliable, high speed internet connectivity such as Diginet, Fibre or Microwave, especially because the call quality is only as good as the connection to the provider!

VOIP Hosted Switchboard The Hosted PBX service is a fully managed and customisable switchboard solution. There are no upfront costs because you do not need to purchase a physical device. The only cost to you for the Hosted Switchboard service is a monthly service fee. One of the key advantages is that extensions can be located either within a single office or at various sites. Each extension requires a VoIP-enabled telephone, laptop, notebook or cellphone. If you want to work from home for a day simply unplug your phone from the office network, take it home with you, and plug it in at home; your calls will seamlessly follow your phone and you can still transfer calls to/from your colleagues as you would normally. Incoming calls can hunt across extensions in different cities allowing multiple offices to function as one. Best of all, this service is much cheaper than the cost of purchasing or renting a traditional switchboard despite offering functionality only found on the most advanced traditional switchboards.

Line requirements for VOIP (a) If you are using one phone then a minimum requirement of a 2Mbps line is required using a capped data package. Tel Numbers You can keep your existing number and port it over to VOIP (Cost R115 once off) or you can apply for a geographic VOIP number as in 021 565xxxx. You may also keep your existing number on the landline and apply for a VOIP number. Here you can purchase a VOIP/landline phone.
