Disk Space Usage

knowledgebase disk space usage

All data, whether it consists of images, documents or media files requires space on a hard disk. Your hosting account will be allocated a certain amount of disk space on the server, the limit of which is determined by the package that you have selected (a list of our hosting packages, including disk space, is available here).

Over time you may accumulate a large amount of data within your hosting account. This space may be used by your website files and / or any e-mail messages which currently reside on the server. Together these will use a portion of the disk space provided to the account.

Checking how much disk space you are using can be done in two ways.

Checking disk space usage via the Client Area:

  • Log in to the Client Area.
  • Click on the Services button.
  • Select the hosting package that you wish to check.
  • On the Manage Product page, scroll down and click on the Resource Usage tab.
  • You will be given an overview of both your Disk Space and Bandwidth usage.
Checking disk space usage via cPanel:

  • Log in to cPanel.
  • On the left-hand side of the Home page, you will see a line called Disk Space Usage.
  • To see how your disk space is being used, locate the Files section and click on the Disk Usage icon.
  • You will be presented with a list of the different folders in your hosting account, along with how much space each folder and its contents is using.
  • If you scroll down, you will see a second list which can be arranged either by Name or by Disk Usage.
  • Any folder which has a greater-than sign (>) next to it can be expanded so that you can view the space used by the contents of the folder.

Keeping track of your disk usage is important. If you reach your storage limit, you will not be able to receive e-mail and your website may cease to function correctly.

Should you find that you are running out of disk space then you will either need to remove excess files from your account (specifically older e-mail or obsolete files from your website) or upgrade your hosting package.
