Bandwidth or Traffic Usage

knowledgebase bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data which is transferred via a particular service.

The bandwidth for your hosting account can be used by any one of the following:

  • E-mail which you download.
  • E-mail which you send.
  • Web traffic (i.e. visits to your website).
  • FTP traffic (i.e. files which you upload or download using your FTP client).

Your hosting package is allocated a certain amount of bandwidth each month (a list of our hosting packages, including disk space, is available here). The amount of bandwidth used is reset on the first day of every month.

Viewing how much bandwidth you have used can be done in several ways:

Viewing your bandwidth usage via the Client Area:

  • Log in to the Client Area.
  • Click on the Services button.
  • Select the hosting package that you wish to check.
  • On the Manage Product page, scroll down and click on the Resource Usage tab.
  • You will be given an overview of both your Disk Space and Bandwidth usage.

To view more detailed information regarding your bandwidth usage, log in to cPanel and scroll down to the Metrics section.

Bandwidth Webalizer Analog Stats AW Stats

The following items are available to track your bandwidth usage:

  • Bandwidth: This provides a breakdown of all of the bandwidth used by your account, including e-mail and website traffic.
  • Webalizer: This tool will shows traffic usage as well as other very detailed information regarding your website.
  • Webalizer FTP: As with Webalizer, this app will give details statistics regarding all FTP transactions.
  • Analog Stats: Similar to Webalizer in that it provides a high level of detail, predominently in the form of pie charts.
  • AW Stats: Similar to Webalizer and Analog Stats. Also gives detailed information.

Note:
You may notice different totals for bandwidth usage between the Bandwidth tool and the other statistics tools. The Bandwidth tool records everything on a per-byte basis, which means that all data sent to and received from the server will be recorded. The other statistics tools, such as AW Stats only record the size of the data being requested by a visitor to a website, be it an image, document or video. In other words, they do not measure all of the actual bandwidth used whenever a request is made to the server.

If the bandwidth limit for your account is used before the end of the month, you will no longer be able to send or receive e-mail and your website will display a notice that your bandwidth limit has been exceeded. Should this occur, you will need to upgrade your hosting account (recommended if you consistently reach your bandwidth limit).
