Windows Mail for Vista - Creating an IMAP Account

The following steps will assist you in setting your e-mail account up in Windows Mail:

1. In Windows Mail, select Tools / Accounts.

2. In the Internet Accounts box select Add and then Mail.

3. You will be prompted for the following information:

  • Your Name: Enter your first and last name. This is the name that will appear in the From field of messages you send.
  • E-mail Address: Enter your e-mail address (e.g.: mail@example.com).
  • Incoming e-mail server type: Select IMAP from the drop-down menu.
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): mail.yourdomain (e.g.: mail.example.com)
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain (e.g.: mail.example.com)
  • E-mail username: Enter your entire email address using lowercase characters (e.g.: mail@example.com).
  • Password: Enter the password for your e-mail account.

4. Check the Remember password check box.

5. On the Congratulations page, select Do not download my e-mail at this time and then click on the Finish button.

6. On the Internet Accounts page, select the account that you have just added and click on Properties.

7. Click on the Servers tab and select My server requires authentication.

8. Click on the Advanced tab.

  • Ensure that the port number for Incoming mail (IMAP) is: 143
  • Do not select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • Set the port number for Outgoing mail (SMTP) to: 587
  • Do not select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).


9. Click OK

10. On the Internet Accounts page, click Close.
