Apple Mail for Sierra - Creating an IMAP Account

This guide is specific to Apple Mail for OS X Sierra. If you are unsure which version of OS X you are using, you can check by doing the following:

  • Open the Apple Menu (apple mail).
  • Select About This Mac.

If you are not using OS X Sierra, then you will need to refer to the guide which corresponds to your version of OS X.

The following steps will assist you in setting your e-mail account up in Apple Mail
:


1. Open Mail.

2. Select Mail from the menu and click on Add Account.

3. In the Choose a mail account to add window, select Add Other Mail Account and click on Continue.

4. In the Add a Mail Account window, you will be prompted for the following information:

  • Name: Enter your first and last name. This is the name that will appear in the From field of messages you send.
  • Email Address: Enter your entire e-mail address (e.g.: mail@example.com).
  • Password: Enter the password for your e-mail account.


Click on the Sign In button.
Mail will attempt to connect to the server automatically, but will be unsuccessful.

5. You will now be prompted for the following information:

  • Email Address: Enter your entire e-mail address (e.g.: mail@example.com).
  • User Name: Enter your entire email address (e.g.: mail@example.com).
  • Password: Enter the password for your e-mail account.
  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.yourdomain (e.g.: mail.example.com)
  • Outgoing Mail Server: mail.yourdomain (e.g.: mail.example.com)


6. Click on the Sign In button. Mail will attempt to test your settings again.

7. You will see two error messages which state: Mail can't verify the identity of the server. In both bases, simply click on the Continue button.

8. Mail may prompt you to Select the apps you want to use with this account. If it does, ensure that Mail is selected and that Notes is not selected.

9. Click on the Done button.

Note: Mail for OS X Sierra includes a feature which attempts to automatically detect settings for existing e-mail accounts. While enabled, this feature will result in Mail continue to prompt you with the Mail can't verify the identity of the server error message. As such, this feature must be disabled.
