URL Forwarding and Redirects

url forwarding

A URL Forwarding or Redirect is another means of pointing your domain to another hosting provider's web server. This is done by configuring your domain to divert visitors from one address to the other. For example: Adding the redirect http://yourcompany.co.za to the domain http://yourcompany.com means that anyone who visits http://yourcompany.com will be diverted to http://yourcompany.co.za.

There are two ways you can set a redirect up:

Creating a forwarding in the Client Area:

  • Log in to the Client Area.
  • Once in the Client Area click on the Services button, followed by My Services.
  • Click on the Active (Status) button next to the domain that you need to redirect.
  • On the next page scroll down to the Manage Account section.
  • Then click on the Domain Redirects button.
  • Set the Type to Permanent (301) if the forwarding is a permanent one or Temporary (302) if it is only intended to be in place for a short while.
  • Select your domain from the http://(www.)? field.
  • Enter the address to which your domain should point to in the Redirects To --> field.
  • Select Redirect With Or Without 'www' from the 'www.' Redirection field.
  • Click on Add to create the forwarding.

Creating a forwarding using cPanel:

  • Log in to your cPanel account.
  • From the Domains section, select Redirects.
  • Set the Type to Permanent (301) if the forwarding is a permanent one or Temporary (302) if it is only intended to be in place for a short while.
  • Select your domain from the http://(www.)? field.
  • Enter the address to which your domain should point to in the Redirects To --> field.
  • Click on Add to create the forwarding.

Unlike changing DNS records, you will be able to see the effect of a redirect immediately. If you still see the same (old) page after you have implemented a redirect, you may need to clear your browser cache and restart the program. Information on clearing your browser cache can be found here.
